Sunrise of West Hills

A circular driveway curls around the flowers and plants at the entrance to this facility, located in the heart of West Hills. Residents filled the reception and lobby areas on our visit. In fact, throughout our tour we noted how residents seemed to be mingling with each other, chatting in corners and enjoying each other’s company. Similarly, staff and management seemed to be friendly and know the residents quite well. The décor is tasteful, with artwork, fresh flowers and comfortable furniture. A cheerful receptionist greets visitors. Every resident room has a view; some look out onto the lovely front yard. Cream walls and green carpet adorn all rooms, some of which have floral wallpaper trim. Rooms are usually left unfurnished so that residents can add their own personal touches and feel truly at home. All have kitchenettes. Green and white lace tablecloths top the dining room tables. Multiple windows ensure natural light floods the entire room. A jukebox and a popcorn machine add extra elements of whimsy. Menus, posted at the entrance, always offer several specials and many alternatives. Main meals include a variety of offerings from tamales and tostada salads to matzo ball soup and chicken parmesan. Lighter choices include soup, salads and sandwiches along with hot dogs and hamburgers. The bistro offers fresh coffee and snacks. Previous socials have centered on quesadillas and margaritas. In fact, social hours are quite common. A private dining room and two smoking lounges ensure residents’ every whim is covered, whether it’s wanting a puff or some privacy. One of the many activity rooms welcomes residents with its abundance of books and a fireplace. A small TV room allows for quiet relaxation. Lush lawns roll past trees and flowers in the front yard. The backyard hosts a long walkway that residents use for strolling. Residents enjoy board and card games along with memory exercises. Yoga classes are also offered. One of the more popular activities is movie night where residents nosh on tubs of popcorn. The dementia unit, known as Reminiscence Neighborhood, is on the small side, with twenty-three rooms. Residents’ rooms are similar in appearance to rooms in the other portion of the facility. The quaint activity room has a big-screen TV. Books with artwork and a fireplace provide visual and physical warmth. Reminiscence Neighborhood has its own dining room and a backyard with lawn furniture and small gazebo. The Snoezelen room helps calm frustrated or agitated residents with its soft lighting, music and comfortable couches and chairs.
